If you are thinking about filing for divorce, there are many things that need to be considered before you begin.

The first and most important thing you need to do is consult with a family/divorce attorney.  If you have children or joint debt and assets, be sure to consult with an attorney that can handle custody/visitation, child support and equitable distribution.

Getting through your divorce efficiently and timely is going to depend mostly on your attorney's experience and familiarity with the process and potential issues that may arise.

A family attorney can advise and direct you as it relates to your specific circumstances.  The attorney will be able to tell you what you should be doing to put yourself in the best position possible for trial or settlement.

Often times we consult with family and friends when it comes to making difficult life decisions.  Sometimes we even follow their advice but for something as important as your divorce, it is crucial to speak with an attorney who is well equipped to handle your matter.  Your family and friends may not know the specifics of your finances and expenses and therefore are not able to give sound advice regarding such.  They may not know the ins and outs of the law and will not be able to direct you accordingly.  Their role in this process is to be supportive, whether its emotionally and/or financially.

Thinking about filing for a divorce comes with loads of stress.  A divorce is going to change your life completely, your economic status will be affected, and the relationships you have with those you love the most will change.  If you are thinking about moving forward, go see an attorney and get real answers to the questions you have.
